Samsung Galaxy Watch4 to get 50% chip boost…

Samsung Galaxy Watch4

Details are emerging about the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 which will be available to buy on 27 August after an 11th August announcement. We’ve already seen a probably deliberate leak, above, by Amazon.ca. However, the more interesting news is that Samsung will be using their new Exynos W920 chip to power the new Wear OS 3.

Sammyfans reports that

…the CPU has 1.25x faster processing times compared to the Exynos 9110 and 8.8x smoother graphics performance. Furthermore, it is coupled with 1.5GB of RAM, which makes it around 1.5x improved over the Galaxy Watch 3.

Whether or not this translates into a 50% faster Wear OS 3 remains to be seen but I guess it’s possible. To me the more interesting issues raised are these:

  • Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4100/4100+ now faces competition and there will be a greater incentive for Qualcomm to iterate further improvements more quickly
  • How easily, if at all, can 3rd parties like Fossil buy Samsung’s chips instead of those from Qualcomm?
  • What actual performance improvements will there be on the wrist? I’ve used Fossil, Samsung and other Wear OS watches and their speed is alright. I certainly wouldn’t complain about it. I don’t think speed is the main problem for Wear OS.
