The Garmin Fenix 7 Series/Quatix 7, Garmin Epix 2/Quatix AMOLED and FR945LTE (latter to follow) get most of the new features from the recent Edge 1040 and Forerunner 955 launches.

Here is a list of the new features with some quick comments on the more interesting additions for those of you who might be pressed for time. Many of the new features are self-explanatory.

I’ve kept in some of the improvements as they are potentially good too! At the end of this articleI link to DCR’s YouTube video where he expands on some of the points in detail

  • Added SatIQ support – A new battery-saving feature that automatically selects GNSS/Satellite mode when needed. GREAT IDEA! I’ll have to see if the info is recorded in the FIT file.
  • Added eBike support.
  • Added Race Day features – calendarisation of your race day and then adjust daily workout suggestions with your race goal in mind. Good for an ad-hoc day but, please, follow a plan until someone proves this works!
  • Added Stocks widget glance.
  • Added a Reference Point app.
  • Added widget glance folders – Widget glances are excellent but there are perhaps now too many of them. This new feature allows you to bundle some away inside a folder. I’ll be using this one for sure.
  • Added Cycling Ability feature from Edge 1040 – An interesting take on your strength across different power-durations to say which kinds of race/course profile you are best suited. In itself, it’s a mostly useless feature but when combined with Course Demands it enables Garmin to produce a target power Guide for any given course.
  • Added Golf Virtual Caddie support.
  • Added categorization to Activity setup – I think this allows Strava to then correctly categorize your custom sport.
  • Added Training Readiness widget glance – I cover the training readiness metric here. It’s good…but it’s probably wrong!
  • Added a power key control menu item for RCT715 – the new Varia crash recording cam.
  • Added Golf wind speed and direction support.
  • Added ability to disable temperature recording for an activity.
  • Added support for Run Power when paired with a compatible accessory – This includes a slew of features like power alerts and power structured workouts. More detail. You’ll need HRM-PRO/TRI/RUN or RD-POD
  • Added multicolour support to Climb Pro graphs for non-biking activities.
  • Added a “What’s New” screen to call out new features in software updates.
  • Added a watch face chart data fields for battery level and floors climbed.
  • Fixed issues with Jumpmaster wind entry.
  • Fixed issue with the Lock on Road feature.
  • Fixed some localization/translation issues.
  • Fixed issue with auto lap pace alert showing 0:00 time.
  • Fixed golf Tournament mode Green View zoom scaling issue.
  • Fixed issue with hours field for Set Timer in strength workouts.
  • Fixed issue with touch interaction when viewing a Climb preview.
  • Fixed inability to access Segments during an Ultra Run activity.
  • Fixed potential corrupted characters in Daily Suggested Workout.
  • Fixed potential screen flash when using a Connect IQ watch face.
  • Fixed potential shutdown when changing music during an activity.
  • Fixed issue with Climb Pro graph colouring for some bike profiles.
  • Fixed potential shutdown when receiving a tip while on a Connect IQ watch face.
  • Fixed issue causing the device to incorrectly report that it was out of storage space.
  • Fixed potential shutdown when in a strength workout and transitioning from a jog step.
  • Fixed issue where a solar setting was showing up in the Garmin Connect app on non-solar devices.
  • Improved Wi-Fi download speeds.
  • Improved automatic altimeter calibration.
  • Improvements made to Daily Suggested Workouts.
  • Improved VO2 Max graph to now show 4 weeks of data.
  • Improvements and fixes made to Green Contours support.
  • Improvements and fixes made to the Adventure Race activity.
  • Improved Flashlight to remember configured settings over a power cycle.
  • Improved sensors menu by moving connected sensors to the top of the list.
  • Improved the automatic max heart rate notifications and associated settings.
  • Increased the maximum Golf Club count to 30.
  • Update usage of alpha/beta status on About page.
  • Updated phone app pairing flow to now use PIN comparison.

  1. Curious, since beta is ‘ready for public release/public release candidate’ is there any reason not to sign up for beta updates at this point?
