This product can be easily dismissed without delving into the scientific research (as shown below).

Although it is expensive, the question remains, “What is the price for a good night’s sleep?” Sleeping may be easy for some, but not for others. Personally, Hapbee helped me establish a nightly routine, and once the routine was set, I only occasionally used the Smart Sleep Pad when I had trouble falling asleep.

The Smart Sleep Pad is not a cure-all; if you’ve just had a large cup of coffee and are trying to sleep in a bright room on an uncomfortable bed, investing in sleep hygiene measures should be your first step before purchasing something like Hapbee. But you already knew that…

How Does Hapbee Smart Pad work to make you sleep better?

The Theory behind the Hapbee Sleep Pillow is that certain receptors in the brain, such as the MT1 receptor, are activated by melatonin and other sleep molecules. The Sleep Pillow mimics the actions of these molecules by emitting ultra-low frequency vibrations at the precise resonance level of the molecule or receptor in question. These vibrations have the same effect on the MT1 receptor as melatonin but without the side effects or concerns associated with taking melatonin supplements.

Different modes or blends use various combinations of signals to achieve different effects, such as those of THC, CBD, adenosine, and melatonin. In addition to melatonin, other hormones such as progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol also play positive or negative roles in sleep

How Do You Use A Hapbee Smart Sleep Pad?

Simple.

To use the Hapbee Smart Sleep Pad, turn it on and select the desired effect and duration in the app. Once you’ve made your selection, close the app, turn off your phone, and place the pad inside your pillowcase or under your pillow. Then, simply relax and go to sleep! When placed in sleep mode, Hapbee will disable haptics (vibrations) and automatically power down at the end of the selected duration.

Effectiveness:

This technology is purported to improve sleep quality by promoting deep sleep and enhancing REM sleep

According to Hapbee, the Smart Sleep Pad has been proven to provide up to 48% improvement in sleep quality.

STILL SCEPTICAL?: The UK’s NHS treats Cluster Headache Pain in a comparable way by stimulating the Vagus nerve.

This brings me to these links that Hapbee scientifically cite in support of their work, I’ve only skimmed the abstracts and I don’t claim to be a scientist. These studies move towards proving both general and specific effects on biological systems.

3 studies showing that waveforms can selectively stimulate biological systems are shown below, although note that Butters appears to have connections with Hapbee

  1. [Butters 2014] Using a signal derived from the small molecule taxane paclitaxel.  An ulRFE signal was able to promote tubulin polymerization as effectively as a commercially available taxane.
  2. [Butters 2017] Using a signal derived from a small interfering RNA for the MAA7 enzyme in the algae model system Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii. Algae exposed to the ulRFE signal selectively reduced growth rates through the expected pathway.
  3. [Ulasoz 2017] Using a signal derived from the siRNA of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Cells exposed to this EGFR siRNA ulRFE signal saw a 30–70% reduction of EGFR mRNA expression and ~60% reduction in EGFR protein expression compared to control-treated cells.

Cynical?

If you believe that chemicals can stimulate brain receptors, why couldn’t those same receptors be stimulated in a different, non-invasive way? As you know, sound frequencies can make your eardrum vibrate. Just because you can’t hear ultra-low frequency sounds doesn’t mean that they don’t have an effect on other molecules

Anyway, it’s got a money-back guarantee if you fancy giving it a go.

Usability:

The Sleep Pad is powered by an app, allowing users to experiment with different routines and find the one that best suits their needs. The app provides a library of blends, sleep routines, and integrations that have been designed by experts to produce specific results.

The Smart Sleep Pad has been exclusively designed for sleep, featuring a slim, 100% cotton outer design. It is claimed to be 50% more powerful than its predecessor, providing more than five nights of battery life. The pad can easily slide under existing pillows or inside pillowcases without interfering with preferred bedding setups. Users can simply hit the power button, follow their favourite routines, and go to sleep. Additionally, the Hapbee Smart Sleep Pad is anti-microbial, non-allergenic, and flame-retardant, ensuring maximum comfort and safety

Organisation & History

Hapee is a publicly listed company whose major shareholder is Emulatetx, the latter did the original work in this area and over 18 years produced the patented technology that Hapbee uses.

Some commenters on this product have links to the company. For example, Dave Asprey is on the advisory board of Hapbee. I have no links with the company other than to produce this review.

Hapbee was publically announced on 17 Feb 2020 and raised over $500,000 of funding via an Indiegogo campaign with over 1,000 backers. A creditable $215,000 was raised on the first day. As of 17 Mar 2023, it has a market capitalization of over CAD$ 11.6 million.

Hapbee originally offered a large circular ring that could be placed around the neck, head, or under a pillow. However, the second-generation Smart Sleep Pad is a superior format as it easily slips under or into a pillow.

Alternatives

This patented technology is offered exclusively by Hapbee. There is no direct competition.

If you’re researching sleep products because you’ve exhausted basic recommendations for good sleep hygiene, you’re not alone. I’ve been there too! Sometimes, even getting into a routine of sleeping in a cool, dark room on your own isn’t enough. Eating early and avoiding coffee can help,…but you’ve already tried that!

This class of wearable products is loosely referred to as neurostimulation products. As a result, a wide range of products could be classified as competitors, such as Philips Sleepband / Smart Sleep; Dreem 2 headband, Muse S, Muse 2, Neorhythm and the Apollo Mood Altering wearable. However, within the specific class of consumer-grade, low-wavelength electromagnetic signal emitters, Hapbee claims to have patent protection. So, it’s unclear to what degree technically similar products exist or could ever exist. It appears that directly competing products cannot exist.

Here are some products that enhance sleep quality in some way or other be that getting to sleep more quickly or improving the quality of sleep.
  1. QuietOn Sleep 3.1 – Noise Cancelling Sleep earbuds.  Quietens noisy environments to help you sleep or concentrate during the day. A one-off cost with no subscription. (Discount here)
  2. Eight Sleep – Smart mattress temperature control – Optimises night-long temperature. Good for menopausal women and athletes.

The Hapbee Smart Sleep Pad appears to be an effective solution for individuals struggling with sleep quality. Its bio-streaming technology and app-powered features make it a unique device that is user-friendly and customizable. With a 100-night risk-free guarantee, users can try the device and return it for a full money-back guarantee if not satisfied. Overall, the Hapbee Smart Sleep Pad provides a natural and non-invasive solution to improve sleep quality, allowing users to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.
