FORM gets GPS, Pru London no more, ViVax, Wiggins bankruptcy proceedings, new OPPO & Celia

In the news today

Wiggins

Bradley Wiggins faces bankruptcy proceeding brought by the UK tax authorities, as reported by the UK’s Daily Mail. It’s unclear how, if at all, this relates to his recent divorce. Apparently, the HMRC’s petition was dismissed and Wiggins was ordered to pay £916 costs.

Vivax Hidden Motor out of business

Cycling Tips reports that the Vivax hidden motor company is no more. So gone is your chance of impressing your mates by using the secret extra 100w put through your Shimano Hollowtech cranks.

Oppo Watch

A new OPPO watch launches in 2 days time. It looks exactly like the Apple Watch…but isn’t. In fact, the previous version ran a flavour of android but Friday’s launch sees a modified version supporting Wear OS. I’m not sure of the pricing but the original OPPO watch was super cheap. So this could be interesting (ish). It will be somewhat ironic for the aesthetic rippers off if Apple changes the Apple Watch 6 looks in September to remove the crown.

the Apple Watch Ultra Review – not ULTRA, definitely Big, Expensive & Rugged

FORM Goggles

A little while back, FORM goggles announced support for GPS taken from Apple Watch and Garmin FEnix/945. Well, this functionality is now live and available for all to use. My concerns were about the accuracy of the metrics, but I guess the FR945/Fenix 6 delivers OWS GPS stats better than other tri watches. Apple Watch3/4/5 support will appeal to many as well. The only slight downside is that the previous pairing between FORM goggles and the Polar OH1+ will not work alongside the Garmin/Apple pairing ie it is only possible to get oHR from the wrist if you also want GPS from the wrist or, put another way, it can only pair with one device when in use.

Pru Ride London

Pru Ride London was cancelled this year, which is a shame as it is the world’s biggest sportive and goes past my front gate, almost. However, the Pru sponsorship deal also came to a natural end this year in any case. With the re-arrangement of the cycling calendar, the London Marathon company, that also organised the cycling race, has pulled out of hosting the UCI cycling event alongside the public event. THAT, and the lack of a sponsor and CV19, puts the 2021 race in serious doubt as local authorities on the route are asked if they still want to participate.

Celia is back

Finally, wareable.com  reports that the Huawei Watch GT2 will get the newly-named Celia voice assistant.
