— AI Content End —

ChatGPT is touted as a partial replacement for Google Search. for example you might ask google “Garmin 965 Review” and get a list of possible options or you might ask ChatGPT “Write a review of the Garmin 965” to be told the answer immediately.

The short product review generated by Chat GPT is impressive compared to Google’s standard search results format. Presently, content after 2021 has to be manually given to the AI which then structures the content and presents the given facts (as given) ‘accurately’ in grammatically correct sentences. Many people prefer brief reviews, and Chat GPT can efficiently provide them instead of relying on Google Search.

Clearly, this ‘review’ is a rehash of some of the basic features/specifications and lacks real-world test results as well as an opinion. In this case, ChatGPT didn’t rank the 965 against other Garmin or competitor watches but I probably could have done that with a little bit more thought.

However, reproducing content verbatim from other sources by Chat GPT may result in copyright infringement, and if the AI is legally classified as a Publisher, it could be held liable for the secondary effect of its content. (Indeed the author of one of the sources I used contacted me and said just that!…whoops! correction just made

Once Chat GPT gains live internet access, it could pull information from live sources to offer more comprehensive reviews, but this may adversely impact content creators who depend on website traffic, advertising and affiliate revenues. While I do want Google to use my content to drive traffic, I do not want AI/Chat GPT to use it without citation, leading to lower traffic levels. After all, the ads would appear on Chat GPT’s site, not mine.

To avoid these issues, publishers may have the option to opt out of having their content added to Chat GPT, and this may result in more paywalls around their content, both to protect and monetize it.

Although another solution would be that AI/Search engines pay content creators, this will really only continue for large media organizations (IIRC there was a case in Australia with Google a couple of years ago that ended up doing just that)

So, the emergence of AI-generated content poses existential challenges for content creators, centralizes content provision in the hands of a few media giants, and raises significant questions about copyright and liability for AI Search Engines.

Thoughts?

23 thoughts on “Garmin Forerunner 965 Review [AI version – Thu March 2nd]

  1. My thoughts: as a child, I was looking forward to AI that helps us. As an adult… this will upend significants parts of the society. I don’t know how good or how bad it will go…

    1. sentient AI, use of military robotics, threats of tactical nuclear strikes, man-made pandemics, shooting down UFOs…what could possibly go wrong? We could just about manage all of that this year! it’s not even science fiction anymore (well, apart from the sentient AI)

  2. The problem with ChatGPT and any LLM is that it doesn’t have a concept of truth. What it actually does is predict the statistically most probable response to a prompt based upon its model. These things are not even close to knowing what they spit out is legitimate or not. It’s like an impressively over-engineered MadLibs.

    1. truth and facts are not as clear cut as you think.

What colour is the sky? Looks blue to me right now but my Ozzie mate swears it’s black yet the scientific reality might be that it has no colour.

scientific facts are not necessarily absolute facts and may be overturned by later scientific discoveries.

Humans can’t even decide on truth so it would be unrealistic (unfair?) to expect open AI 3.5 to do that.

    2. Maybe chatgpt is like a pet dog. ie it tries to please.

if you ask it to do a review of the FR965 you might find, as was the case a couple of weeks ago, that it gives you a review of the 955 but calls it the 965.

reviewers make factual mistakes. why can’t chatgpt? (Answer: because that makes it liable! and someone is WAY more likely to sue them than a reviewer as the ability to pay a significant settlement is massively higher)

  3. 1. I know nothing of AI

But if it’s just a rehash of spec sheets in a more readable format then “reviewers” who do this are in trouble. But those who personally critique a product and offer an insight unique to their experience – well I’m not sure how an AI tool can do this.

I “like” the above comment about Ai not knowing truth. This is quite a dark thought in this day and age where lies are rebranded “mis-speaking” or “alternative truth”. But I’m dgressing.

Really looking forward to the 265, it ticks most of my boxes, minus the value box no doubt.

    1. you are right

however, I strongly suspect that the microcosm of readers on sites like this are intelligent and motivated individuals when it comes to the consumption of knowledge. you can see through a rehashed spec sheet
I also strongly suspect that very very many people just want a famous person to say something is awesome or that a pretty picture convinces them its awesome. and don’t even get me started on Instagram or tiktok.

another chain of thought would be to see AI as a form of EDITORIAL ROLE, an advanced version of GRAMMARLY, or just a digital brainstorm to get your content started. All of those thoughts just offer making people like me more productive BUT they don’t solve the fundamental problem that AI “search results” could drive traffic elsewhere.

  4. I was wondering what phrase did you search? Because this is what I get when using ChatGPT –

“…As of my knowledge cutoff date of September 2021, there was no official information available on the release of a Garmin 965 watch. Garmin’s latest watches at that time were the Forerunner 955 and the Enduro, both of which were released in 2021. However, it’s possible that Garmin may release a watch with that model number in the future. I recommend checking Garmin’s website or following their social media accounts for any official announcements…”

      1. I was talking about case size, any confirmation about this, is it a 46mm case or it’s more a Fenix 7x case size?

      2. idk
        7x is 51 x 51 x 14.9 mm, 955 is 46.5 x 46.5 x 14.4 (mm). i’d guess somewhere in between

i assume you are thinking about the bezel size? the images show a small bezel iirc.
its a sports watch so its going to be as small as they can make it for a 1.4-inch AMOLED screen, 416 x 416px (1.4″=35.56mm diameter screen)
probably the titanium is for lens protection so it doesn’t need to be so thick

  5. Now ask chatgpt to rewrite your review into a limerick or in iambic pentameter.

That’s seriously where chatgpt becomes awesome.

The other stuff is just with generic empty phrases that sounds like boilerplate that any copywriter could do. Meh.

Putting the review into verse is something that really impresses me, because I can write jargon boiler plate at nearly the speed of though. Chatgpts poetry would take a week of effort at least.

    1. The Forerunner 965, from Garmin’s line, Is better than the 955, so fine, It boasts a 1.4″ AMOLED screen, The first of its kind, a sight to be seen.

The Fenix 7X is of similar size, But the Epix Gen 2 cannot quite rise, The 965’s display has more to show, And nearly matches the 955’s glow.

Wrist-based Running Dynamics is new, Stats like cadence and length are in view, No more pods or straps, it’s all in the watch, A convenient upgrade that’s hard to top.

Multiband GNSS and SatIQ technology, Can pinpoint your position with accuracy, Flat terrain calls for GPS only, In complex surroundings, multiband is holy.

The watch’s bezel is crafted in titanium, ECG capability might come, it’s not alien, The 965 is sleeker, with a larger display, And three color options to brighten your day.

Battery life is a significant boost, In smartwatch mode, up to 23 days, a truth, For GPS usage, it’s 31 hours long, A helpful feature that’s far from wrong.

The Forerunner 965 is not yet out, But it’s expected soon, without a doubt, At €649.99 or $599.99 it will retail, A perfect match for your fitness trail.

    2. There once was a watch, Forerunner Its updates, a limited number AMOLED display And wrist-based array Garmin has done quite a number

Multiband GNSS and SatIQ too These features are sure to woo Titanium bezel in sight ECG could be just right And a sleeker look, brand spanking new

The battery life, quite impressive 23 days in smartwatch mode, progressive For GPS, 31 hours With multiband in towers Available in colours, quite expressive

For €649.99 or $599.99 The Forerunner 965 is divine Black, Powder Gray or Whitestone for sure Garmin’s launch will soon be in line

      loses the formatting, sorry
